Cincinnati Interest: Pair formal oval portraits of Louis Hudepohl II & wife Mary, founders of the Hudepohl Brewing Co. c.1870s, O/C, 27½x22½

Ludwig and Agnes Hudepohl immigrated to Cincinnati from Germany in 1838. Ludwig II was born in 1842, and Americanized his name to Louis as a young adult. Louis and partner George Kotte purchased the Koehler Brewery, which they renamed The Buckeye Brewery. Kotte died in 1893, and his widow sold her share of the business to Hudepohl in 1900, and the Hudepohl Brewing Co. was born. Louis Hudepohl was a popular Cincinnatian and a good singer. After his death in 1902, his widow Mary Elizabeth ran the company with assistance from her son-in-law, William A. Pohl.
