1. Edward Charles Volkert, Cincinnati & Old Lyme CT, Old Lyme scene of farmer plowing with team of two oxen, oil on board, 12" x 16", signed. (2,500-3,500)

Born in Cincinnati to German parents, Volkert started his career painting portraits, then moved on to bucolic landscapes. While living in New York, Volkert was president of the Bronx Art Guild. He later moved near Old Lyme, CT, in part because of his interest in painting their ever-present oxen, which Volkert described as "twice as good as cows at posing." His style is noted for its impressionist use of light, applied in small dots of paint, while maintaining an interest in the true forms and colors of his subject matter.

32. Portrait of Cardinal Ximenez de Cisneros, Spain, 1436-1517, oil on canvas, 24" x 19". (2,000-3,000)

Ximenez de Cisneros was imprisoned in the 1470s for six years over his disputed claim for a vacant benefice position. Upon release, he became a grand vicar, then resigned to become a Franciscan. In 1492 he was appointed confessor to Queen Isabella. In 1495 he was chosen as Archbishop of Toledo. As archbishop he continued to live the simple and humble life of a Franciscan, which was controversial. By 1507 he was both a cardinal and the Grand Inquisitor of Castile and Leon. His achievements were many, including the founding of the University of Alcalá and publication of the first Polyglot Bible. In 1509 he led King Ferdinand's troops against the Moors. He is honored as a saint in many parts of Spain.

33. Very early portrait of Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford, 1593-1641, oil on canvas, 30" x 24". (2,000-3,000)

Wentworth was the first Earl of Strafford, and very active in British politics. He became chief advisor for King Charles in 1639, but was beheaded in 1641 for suspicion of plotting against Charles.

36. Henry Stephens Eddy, NJ, 1878-1944, Paddle wheeler on the Ohio River, oil on board, 16" x 20", signed. (750-1,000)

Henry Eddy was a pupil of John Twachtman, and exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the National Academy of Design.

37. Benjamin D. Sigmund, England, d.1904, Girl in garden path, watercolor, 10" x 14", signed B.D. Sigmund. (400-600)

Sigmund was a painter of gardens, landscapes, animals and waterways. He has strong auction records, especially for his watercolors.
