Born in Vienna, Joseph Margulies became a distinguished portrait and landscape painter as a resident of New York City. He received his formal training at the National Academy of Design, Cooper Union, as well as the Art Students League and continued his studies abroad in Paris, Vienna and Rome. He was also active with the Rockport Art Association of Cape Ann and maintained a studio in Gloucester where he did marine and harbor views.

Being painted as Salome in this scene was a popular style of portraiture, similar to being painted as Josephine Bonaparte.

103. Thomas Bartholomew Griffin, NY, 1858-1918, Rushing mountain river, oil on canvas, 30" x 25", signed T.B. Griffin, excellent condition, unusually large work for Griffin, outstanding frame. (1,500-2,000)

T.B. Griffin was formally trained at the National Academy of Design. While at the Academy, he exhibited his well-executed impressionistic landscapes. He has extensive listings with many auction records.

104. Edmund Hudson Smart, CA & England, 1873-1942, Across the Meadow - Arundal Farm NH, 1931, oil on canvas, 21" x 26", signed & dated front, title on reverse. (500-700)

Smart studied with Hubert von Herkomer in London, at the Antwerp Academy and Académie Julian in Paris. An itinerant artist, he followed portrait commissions widely and also painted allegorical subjects. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1913 and by 1925 had settled in Los Angeles. Smart exhibited at the Paris Salon and Royal Academy.
