65. English three piece desk set, inkwell and two candle stands, all on shell bases with ball feet, in original fitted leather case. Central piece holds ribbed and lidded glass inkwell, double-shell letter holder and antler pen tray on back. All three pieces impressed H.W.&Co, 9751, crowned man hallmark. Merton Willmore studied and exhibited up and down the East Coast, and also studied in Cincinnati under Frank Meyers and Reginald Grooms. He was a member of the American Watercolor Society of New York, the Cincinnati Art Club, and the Salmagundi Club.

Pupil of Frank Duveneck, Jules Lefebvre in Paris at the Julian Academy, and of William Merritt Chase in Shinnecock Hills, Long Island. She exhibited at the Paris Salon, the Panama Pacific Exhibition in San Francisco, the Art Institute of Chicago, and in watercolor exhibits in Boston, New York, and Baltimore.

Arthur Helwig was a Cincinnati painter of impressionist landscapes, abstracts, and murals. He studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy under Bessie Wessel and James Hopkins, and at the Academie Julian in Paris. He was a president of the Cincinnati Art Club, and his works can be found in several museums.

Also referenced as Charles John Arter, this artist studied in Cincinnati and Paris, and had studios in Venice, London and New York. Pope Pius X and the King and Queen of Italy were among his many famous portrait sitters.

Francis Vreeland worked at Rookwood Pottery from 1900-1902 while studying at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. He later studied in Paris at the Academie Julien, and in New York at the Art Student's League. He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1911.

78. Gulbrand Sether, USA & Norway, 1869-1910, Winter Sunshine, gouache, 5" x 9.25", signed. 400-600

Sether was born in Norway, where he worked on ships travelling in the Arctic Circle, then studied painting under Fritz Thaulow. He emigrated to the United States in 1893, and eventually took up painting full time in the Chicago area. He is well-listed, known especially for snow and night scenes.

79. George Emerick Essig, NJ, 1838-1926, Rough waves with bouy and steamboat, watercolor, 9" x 22", signed. 500-700

George Emerick studied marine painting with James Hamilton and Edward Moran. He worked primarily in watercolor, and focused on marine subjects. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1876-1888. His works hung in several Atlantic City hotels, and many of his paintings are still in the Reading Public Museum and Art Gallery.
