AUCTION ROUNDUP

Local artist holds sway at Holman's Select Auction

Fine furniture and quality paintings set the stage for Stuart Holman's Spring Select Auction this year on May 3. Buyers were located in all four corners of the United States, as well as in England and Scotland. The top two lots in the sale were oils on canvas by Cincinnati artist Charles Salis Kaelin (1858-1929): an impressionist snowscape, 25 by 30in, made $22,000, and an impressionist dense forest, 30 by 25in, brought $11,000. Both paintings were sold on the auction floor. All prices include a 10 percent buyer's premium.

The item drawing the most pre-sale interest was an elegant peacock lamp. The 20in high cold metal base was in the shape of the peacock's body, with glass cabochons accenting the "eyes" of the plumage. The 9in chipped ice shade was decorated with enameled feathers. With phone bidders lined up around the room, it sold for $9,900. Another unique lamp in the sale was an alabaster snake charmer, signed Prof. E. Tattorino, which mesmerized the crowd to bring a high bid of $1,925. A Handel Arts and Crafts desk lamp, with signed hand painted shade, sold for $1,485.

Charles Salis Kaelin's snow scene topped Stuart Holman's auction, selling for $22,000

19th Century KPM portrait plaque, 12.5 by 10in, $7,150

Another standout of the sale was a 19th Century hand-painted KPM portrait plaque of an elegant lady, 12.5 by 10in and impressed KPM, bringing $7,150. Continuing the offering of 19th Century hand painted porcelain were two 15in German chargers. One portrayed a camp scene with peasants and horsemen, the other a group of putti. They were sold for $1,375 apiece.

Holman's Select Auctions continue to feature paintings by listed artists. A lively landscape by Emile-Othon Friesz (1879-1949), oil on canvas, 18 by 21in, did well at $6,600. Sir William Beechey's (1753-1839) portrayal of a British cavalry scene, oil on canvas, 25 by 30in, brought $6,600. Cincinnati artist L.H. Meakin (1853-1917) was well represented in the sale with six signed etchings and an oil on canvas landscape, 24 by 36in. The painting brought $4,950. Highland Jenny, oil on canvas, 28 by 30in, by Scottish artist Alexander Johnston (1815-1891) sold for $4,950. A beach scene in watercolor, 5 by 8in, by Hercules Brabazon Brabazon (1821-1906) landed at $2,750. A grouse-hunting scene by D. W. Huntington (1860-1906), watercolor, 10 by 8in, raised $1,925. The high bid on an oil on canvas of a lion and lioness, 20 by 26in, by Thomas C. Lindsay (1845-1907) was $1,045.

Leading the furniture offering at $4,730 was a ten-piece flamed mahogany dining set by the Lincoln Chair Co. The set was inlaid with medallions, urns and leaves, and included eight chairs and a superb sideboard. A matching flip-top table by the same maker brought $1,210. An elegant nine-piece satinwood Romweber bedroom set, inlaid with figures, urns and flora, sold for $4,125. A two-door Arts and Crafts bookcase, unmarked but with a strong Stickley look, finished at $2,970. A 19th Century French Boulle marble top cabinet fetched $2,145.
